According to The Hollywood Reporter, sales and rental revenue of DVD product generated an estimated $21.2 billion in total consumer spending last year, according to the Digital Entertainment Group.

The DEG is the home entertainment industry's premiere lobbying organization, made up of Hollywood's major studios, mini-major home video suppliers and the majority of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers.

When combining sales and rental of VHS and DVD, the DEG reported that total home video consumer spending in the United States reached an estimated $24.5 billion. While that number has been contested by some knowledgeable industry insiders as being high by as much as $2.5 billion, the undisputed fact remains that last year's total home video sales and rental revenue once again dwarfed the U.S. boxoffice estimate of $9.53 billion during the same frame.
