Rapper-turned-actor 50 Cent has joined the growing cast of 20th Century Fox's upcoming comedy Spy, playing himself. It isn't quite clear how he will fit into the story line at this time.

Melissa McCarthy stars in the project, which at one point was entitled Susan Cooper, as a CIA analyst who heads out into the field for the first time. We reported last week that she takes on this first assignment to find out who is behind the death of her colleague and lover (Jude Law), with Jason Statham portraying an overconfident yet incompetent secret agent. Bobby Cannavale plays a villainous Italian playboy, with Rose Byrne, Nia Long and Miranda Hart co-starring in unspecified roles.

Paul Feig is directing from his own original screenplay and producing alongside his Feigco Entertainment producing partner Jesse Henderson and Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping. Production is scheduled to begin later this month in Budapest.

50 Cent most recently starred in Escape Plan and Last Vegas, and he just wrapped production on Last Vegas. He is also executive producing and co-staring in the upcoming Starz series Power.
