In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) are going to write the screenplay for Universal's Monster High.

The film is based on a new Mattel property. The monster musical takes place at a "frighteningly fashionable" Monster High and showcases the spawn of famous monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman dealing with the trials of high school.

After spending years making toys that are based on other companies' properties or movies, Mattel is launching its first in-house brand created from scratch this summer. They are bringing out Monster High via a combination of books, webisodes, animation as well as toys, apparel and accessories. With all of these ancillary markets being covered a live-action movie was inevitable.

Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, composer Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are producing the film.
