With principal photography set to begin in just a few months on 20th Century Fox's highly-anticipated Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant, director Ridley Scott has found his leading lady. Deadline reports that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Katherine Waterston has landed the key role of Daniels. No further details were given for this new character, but it is said to be the young actress' biggest role to date.

We reported last month that Prometheus star Noomi Rapace will return as Elizabeth Shaw in Alien: Covenant, but she will have a much smaller role, amounting to a mere cameo. Michael Fassbender is also returning as the android David. The story centers on the crew of the colony ship Covenant, who are bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, when they discover what they think is an uncharted paradise. But it actually turns out to be a dark, dangerous world. And the sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Director Ridley Scott recently confirmed that Alien: Covenant will be the start of a whole new trilogy, which will eventually connect to his 1979 classic Alien. Production is scheduled to take place in March at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia. The filmmaker also plans to go on location in Australia, to utilize monumental forest and monumental rock formations throughout the 16 week production. 20th Century Fox has set an October 6, 2017 release date, putting Alien: Covenant up against Warner Bros.' The Jungle Book: Origins.

Ridley Scott is directing from a script written by John Logan (Skyfall), Michael Green (Green Lantern) and Jack Paglen (Transcendence). The director recently confirmed that classic Alien creatures such as the egg, Facehugger, Chestburster and "the big boy" will all be back in Alien: Covenant. There have also been rumors that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley may be connected to this story. Is it possible that Daniels is related to Ripley? Is she Ripley's mom?

Katherine Waterston had a breakout performance in last year's Inherent Vice, and she also starred in Sleeping with Other People, Manhattan Romance and Steve Jobs earlier this year. She will next be seen in the highly-anticipated Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is set for release on November 18, 2016. What do you think about Katherine Waterston joining the cast of Alien: Covenant?
