Technically speaking, there is a sequel to the 2000 thriller American Psycho, but it had nothing to do with Wall Street anti-hero and serial killer Patrick Bateman as personified by Christian Bale. American Psycho II: All American Girl was a cheap direct-to-DVD knock off starring Mila Kunis that only had a minor connection to Bret Easton Ellis' original creation.
The novel was published in 1991, and the film adaptation quickly became a cult hit upon its release on April 14th of 2000. Due to both the film and novel's popularity, Patrick Bateman is considered an icon of sorts, and for years, fans have asked for a sequel. Bret Easton Ellis has never obliged, but that may soon change. When posed with the question "What would Patrick Bateman be doing right now? Here, in 2012?" A question that has arisen far too many times in the past couple of years, Bret Easton Ellis decided to give his definite answer this past weekend, hitting his Twitter account with a barrage of possibilities.
These Tweets have seemingly laid the foundation for a novel sequel that could possibly lead to a second feature film. Bret Easton Ellis is going to pitch his ideas to his publishers, and currently has 14 pages of notes.
Those notes include various plot points such as Bateman killing his father's mistress, Bateman's obsession with Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Patrick fantasizing about a three way with Rihanna and Chris Brown, all while hating on Barack Obama.
Bret Easton Ellis hopes to have Patrick Bateman dissecting Don Henley's Building the Perfect Beast. He will also give essays on Adele and Kanye West. His favorite song of the moment would be Fireworks by Katy Perry, which leads Bateman to killing Perry's personal trainer. Patrick will also use Facebook as a means to post pictures of recently murdered women, but no one will notice, and those that do simply post a "Fuck yeah!" In the comment section.
A lot of these ideas are stream of consciousness on Bret Easton Ellis' part, but it is possible that some of this material will wind up in a future book and possible film. As it seems Bret Easton Ellis is quite serious about bringing Patrick Bateman back into the pop consciousness. There is no telling if Christian Bale would ever be interested in returning for a movie sequel, though.
In late December, Lionsgate announced that they were moving forward on a remake of American Psycho that takes place in 2012, written and directed by Noble Jones. That film has not yet been greenlit for production, and may stall if Bret Easton Ellis moves ahead with his own planned sequel.
