Robert Zemeckis' Allied Trailer Unites Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard

By Ryan Scott — October 5th, 2016

Eventually, most great Hollywood directors wind up tackling a war movie. Robert Zemeckis is finally going to put his stamp on a World War II drama with Allied next month. With the release date approaching, Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer online giving us our best look at the movie so far.

Paramount Pictures uploaded the latest trailer for Allied to their Youtube channel recently, which gives us a great look at the conflict that Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard will be facing during the course of the movie. Previous trailers only gave us faint glimpses of the actual plot, but this trailer focuses very heavily on the layered, complex, emotional story. Max (Brad Pitt) and Marianne (Marion Cotillard) start out as undercover operatives who have to fake a marriage, but then fall in love and get married for real. However, things get dicey when it is revealed that Marianne may be a double agent. If that is indeed the case, Max will have to kill the woman he loves and the mother of his child in order to serve his country.

"In 1942, an intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war."

Robert Zemeckis is best known for directing the Back to the Future trilogy, but over time has accumulated a body of work that could potentially make him one of the greats when it is all said and done. But much like Steven Spielberg and even Christopher Nolan now, he is about to tackle a World War II drama, a staple of many great directors throughout history. While Robert Zemeckis has never tackled material quite like this before, everything we have seen from the trailers leads us to believe he didn't have any trouble with it.

Paramount Pictures is likely hoping that the star power they have with Brad Pitt coupled with a beloved director like Robert Zemeckis can translate into a big box office haul in addition to some awards consideration. The studio is losing money left and right after a series of expensive bombs like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Ben-Hur failed to deliver. Allied is most definitely the kind of movie that can bring in the money the studio needs, assuming it is received well when it gets released next month.

Allied was written by Steven Knight, whose previous credits include Eastern Promises, Locke and Pawn Sacrifice. The movie has a prime awards season-friendly release date on November 23, which will put it up against Disney's Moana and Bad Santa 2. It should work as pretty decent counter-programming to both of those movies, but it will still be quite the crowded weekend at the box office.
