Nike Raffles Off Back to the Future 2 Self-Lacing Shoes

By Ryan Scott — October 5th, 2016

Back to the Future 2 gave us a lot of very iconic imagery and took on the idea of what the year 2015 might look like. While many of those things never came to pass, Nike has finally made the iconic self-lacing shoes a reality. Yes, the Nike Mag with actual working self-lacing technology will be made available this month, but those who want a pair will have to win them, not buy them.

Nike CEO Mike Parker announced in a YouTube video recently that the company has made a limited quantity of the Nike Mag shoes featured in Back to the Future 2. The shoes are going to be raffled off, meaning that getting your hands on a pair of these shoes will be left entirely up to chance. The good news is that anyone who wants to buy an entry can do so for $10. The 89 lucky winners are going to be announced on October 17 and those interested can enter the raffle now. Here is what Mike Parker had to say about the shoes in a statement following the announcement.

"Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the Nike Mag unlocked something much bigger at Nike. It sent us down an uncharted path of innovation, but it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world's biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson's."

All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation in order to help find a cure for Parkinson's disease. In 2011, Nike released a limited quantity of a version of the Nike Mag which were auctioned off, which raised $5.7 million for the foundation. Those shoes didn't feature the self-lacing technology that this new version of the Nike Mag does, which pretty much makes the shoe everything that Robert Zemeckis originally envisioned in Back to the Future 2 back in 1989. Nike gave the first pair of these self-lacing Nike Mags to Michael J. Fox last year on Oct. 21, which was the exact day that Marty McFly traveled to in the movie.

The Nike Mag sneakers were only on screen in Back to the Future 2 for mere seconds, but have remained an enduring bit of imagery from the movie. They are also something that fans have wanted to get their hands on for quite some time. With DeLorean's out of production and none of them actually able to travel through time (as far as we know) and hoverboards not quite up to the level that the movie showcased, these shoes may be the most perfectly realized bit of technology from the movie to date.

Only a very small number of Back to the Future fans will actually win a pair of these shoes in the raffle as seen in Back to the Future Part II, with several other pairs being auctioned off over the next few weeks in Hong Kong, London and New York. However, Nike will also be releasing a shoe called the HyperAdapt 1.0 in November, which will also feature similar technology, which could serve as a pretty decent substitute. Those wanting to enter the raffle for the Nike Mag shoes can enter as many times as they would like, so if you've got some money to throw at it, you can slightly increase your chances at winning a pair. Plus, the money is going to a good cause. To enter the raffle, visit Nike.com/mag. You can get a better look at the shoes for yourself in the video below.
