Could Captain America: Civil War Win an Oscar?

By Ryan Scott — September 25th, 2016

The movie awards season battle is heating up, and Marvel Studios has officially decided to throw their hat into the ring. Given the tremendous success of Captain America: Civil War the studio clearly thinks they have a shot at some awards recognition as they have submitted the blockbuster for awards contention. The movie already dominated the box office, so why not the Oscars as well?

According to ComicBook.com Marvel officially held a "for your consideration" screening of Captain America: Civil War on September 23. These are essentially screenings that are meant to catch the eye of Academy Awards voters and other awards organizations such as the Golden Globes. The idea is to convince those in charge of nominating movies for awards that the movie is deserving of recognition, but that may be a tough thing for Marvel to be able to do.

For one, Marvel Studios has never won an Oscar. That may be pretty surprising to hear considering the tremendous amount of success their movies have enjoyed both at the box office and critically over the last handful of years. Marvel has managed to garner a few nominations at least, with movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier earning nominations in categories like Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But Captain America: Civil War is something that Marvel Studios likely feels is worthy of more than just technical awards.

Critics and fans absolutely loved Captain America: Civil War. The movie currently has a 90 percent all around approval rating from both fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best-reviewed movies of 2016. Not only that, but it is also the highest grossing movie worldwide of 2016, having brought in $1.15 billion total. With those things considered, it doesn't seem like a stretch to think such a well liked, popular movie should get some awards consideration, but don't get your hopes up Marvel fans.

While Captain America: Civil War is by most accounts an excellent movie, for whatever reason, the Academy simply doesn't tend to honor effects-heavy blockbusters. There are notable exceptions to this, such as Christopher Nolan's Inception, but those are few and far between. Even The Dark Knight, a movie many consider to be one of the if not the single greatest superhero movie ever made couldn't even get a Best Picture nomination. Maybe this will be the year things change and Captain America: Civil War will get some awards season respect, but we will have to wait and see.
