Flatliners Remake Gets Summer 2017 Release Date

By Brian Gallagher — July 12th, 2016

Last week, we reported that original Flatliners star Kiefer Sutherland has signed on to star in Sony Pictures new remake, which was scheduled to start shooting late last week. While we don't know if filming has in fact started, Sony Pictures has gone ahead and set a release date for this new Flatliners, which will hit theaters on August 18, 2017. While it is currently the only movie set for release on that date, that entire month is chocked full of high-profile releases.

The schedule for August 2017 at Box Office Mojo reveals that 20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant and Open Road Films' Blazing Samurai will hit theaters on August 4, 2017. That will be followed by Warner Bros.' theatrical remake of CHiPS, Focus Features' The Coldest City and Sony/Columbia Pictures' EmojiMovie: Express Yourself on August 11, 2017. The only other movie slated for release that month is Disney's Villa Capri, hitting theaters on August 25, 2017.

The original Flatliners followed a group of medical students and close friends who conduct experiments with near death experiences. Each one of them has their heart stopped before being revived instantly, which causes them to experience nightmarish visions of their childhood, reflecting either sins they have committed, or sins committed against them. Their unorthodox extracurricular studies have very dark consequences, as their supernatural visions begin to intensify. The cast was chocked full of rising stars at the time such as Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin.

This new cast is being described as 'more inclusive' and international, featuring Ellen Page and Diego Luna, although no details were given for their characters quite yet. Nina Dobrev is portraying Marlo, an overachieving student who is at the top of her class. The remake cast also includes James Norton and Kiersey Clemons, with Kiefer Sutherland said to be playing a "seasoned doctor."

Niels Arden Oplev (Dead Man Down) is directing from a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code), who started his career by writing sequels to another 90s sci-fi classic, the Species follow-ups Species III and Species: The Awakening. Michael Douglas, who produced the original Flatliners, is back to produce the remake, alongside Laurence Mark. With shooting supposedly starting soon, we'll be sure to keep you posted with more updates and set photos as soon as we have them.
