Forrest Gump Is Coming to IMAX Theaters This September

By Brian Gallagher — June 5th, 2014

In honor of Forrest Gump's 20th Anniversary this year, Paramount Pictures announced today that it will release the 1994 classic from director Robert Zemeckis in IMAX theaters for the first time, starting September 5.

It isn't known if this is a limited theatrical run, or if the studio is rolling out a newly-restored version of the drama for the anniversary release. The drama starring Tom Hanks will be going up against Lionsgate's Addicted and Open Road Films' The Green Inferno.

Tom Hanks took home his second Academy Award for his portrayal of the title character, as the plot follows his life story. He crossed paths with several historical figures throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, including Elvis Presley, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. Forrest Gump earned $329.6 million during its theatrical run in 1994.

In related news, Paramount pushed its animated sequel The Spongebob Squarepants Movie 2 from February 13, 2015 to February 6, 2013, where it will face Jupiter Ascending, Mortdecai and Seventh Son.
