Tarantino Planning Third Western, Ennio Morricone to Score Hateful Eight

By Brian Gallagher — July 11th, 2015

Director Quentin Tarantino and the cast of his upcoming Western The Hateful Eight invaded Hall H at Comic-Con today, revealing the first footage to the massive crowd, although it hasn't gone online yet. But we did get a new poster. At the end of the panel, Quentin Tarantino made a surprise announcement that legendary composer Ennio Morricone will craft the score for The Hateful Eight, his first original Western score in over 40 years. Here's what the filmmaker had to say during the panel.

"I want to make one announcement that people don't know yet. It wasn't for sure, but we just settled it. You guys know that I don't use an original score in my movies, I kinda take scores from other movies and put 'em in there. This one, I thought should have an original score. So I'm here to announce that the great Ennio Morricone will be doing the score for The Hateful Eight. He's writing right now, and recording in Prague in the next couple of weeks."

Ennio Morricone has over 500 scoring credits to his name, including timeless classics such as Once Upon a Time in the West, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Untouchables and Bugsy, just to name a few. Quentin Tarantino has frequently used his work while putting together the soundtracks for his previous movies, and the composer provided an original song, "Ancora Qui," for 2012's Django Unchained. The seven-minute clip that the director showed featured music from the composer's work on the 1982 classic The Thing.

The Hateful Eight marks Quentin Tarantino's second Western movie, following Django Unchained, and the filmmaker teased during the panel that he will make another Western in the future.

"You have to make at least 3 westerns to call yourself a 'Western Director.' I'll make a 3rd so I can call myself that."

It isn't known if or when the director plans on releasing the seven-minute clip from The Hateful Eight to the public, but we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as more updates come in. The Hateful Eight is slated to open in limited release on Christmas Day, in over 50 theaters with 70MM projectors, before opening nationwide in January. Are you excited that the filmmaker is planning on making another Western?
