Jumanji 2, Equalizer 2, Flatliners & More Get New Release Dates

By Brian Gallagher — November 3rd, 2016

Earlier today, Sony Pictures moved their highly-anticipated Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower from its February 17, 2017 release date, to an undetermined date next summer. Now we have word that the adaptation will be released on July 28, 2017, which caused Sony to make several other release date changes. Jumanji 2, which was originally slated to open on July 28, 2017, will now move to December 22, 2017, where it will face Pitch Perfect 3, The Six Billion Dollar Man, The Story of Ferdiand and an untitled comedy from Warner Bros.

Deadline reports that the studio has also moved director Edgar Wright's comedy Baby Driver from March 17, 2017 to August 11, 2017, the same frame that the studio opened their R-rated comedy Sausage Party this year. Baby Driver will now face CHiPs, The Coldest City and Emoji Movie: Express Yourself in its new date. If it would have stayed in place on March 17, 2017, it would have faced Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Belko Experiment.

Aside from Jumanji 2 and Baby Driver, Sony has also moved The Equalizer 2 almost a full year, with the studio pushing the action sequel from September 29, 2017 to September 14, 2018. In its previous date, it would have only faced Universal's American Made starring Tom Cruise. As of now, there is no direct competition on September 14, 2018, but Sony's Hotel Transylvania 3 and Warner Bros.' Scooby-Doo are set to open one week later on September 21, 2018.

The studio wasted no time filling the September 29, 2017 date, moving their Flatliners remake into that spot. The sci-fi thriller was originally slated to hit theaters on August 18, 2017, going up against The Hitman's Bodyguard. The remake stars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemons and original Flatliners star Kiefer Sutherland.

Finally, just hours after the full trailer debuted, Sony has moved the highly-anticipated sequel T2 Trainspotting from February 3, 2017 to March 3, 2017, where it will open in limited release, before expanding nationwide on March 10. The highly-anticipated Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017, along with The Shack and Before I Fall. The only other movie opening in wide release on March 10, 2017 is another potential blockbuster, Warner Bros.' Kong: Skull Island.
