By Brian Gallagher — February 19th, 2014

Meryl Streep has signed on for a small but pivotal role in the upcoming Ruby Films drama Suffragette.

The story centers on Maude (Carey Mulligan), a young woman who becomes engrossed in the early feminist movement, turning to violent acts to bring about more change. Meryl Streep is portraying celebrated political activist Emmeline Pankhurst, who gives a "tour de force" speech on women's rights during a feminist rally. Emmeline Pankhurst founded several political organizations such as Women's Franchise League and the Women's Social and Political Union, and in 1999, she was voted one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century by Time Magazine.

Sarah Gavron is directing from a script by Abi Morgan, who wrote The Iron Lady which starred Meryl Streep. Faye Ward and Alison Owen are producing for Ruby Films, alongside executive producers Cameron McCracken, Tessa Ross and Katherine Butler. Production is scheduled to begin on February 24 in the U.K.

Meryl Streep most recently starred in August: Osage County, and she will next be seen in The Giver and Into the Woods.
