Pigs in Space Returns in Muppets Alien Spoof Video

By B. Alan Orange — December 10th, 2016

The Muppets have remained fairly quiet since their ABC sitcom was canceled. But now the brand is back, and this time they've dusted off one of their more popular bits for an Alien spoof. That's right, the Miss Piggy led Pigs in Space has returned and now they're doing something they couldn't do back in the 1970s.

Pigs in Space was one of the recurring skits on the original Muppets show that premiered in the late 70s. And it was launched to capitalize on all the Star Wars hype at the time. In fact, Mark Hamill, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca all appeared on the Muppet Show just prior to the premiere of The Empire Strikes Back, with that episode's Pigs in Space skit giving audiences a first look at Luke in his Bespin costume.

Now that Star Wars fever is once again at an all-time high with the release of the first-ever stand-alone spin-off next week, Rogue One, the swine have returned in due time. Interestingly enough, though, the pigs are tackling a different movie altogether, though one that has still been in the news quite a bit lately.

Back in the late-70s, it would have been inappropriate for a chest-burster to shower flesh and blood all over a family audience as it sprang forth from the belly of a pig. Not exactly family entertainment. But the times have certainly changed. Now, the pig Muppets are back. And they are doing a recreation of one of the most terrifying and shocking moments in sci-fi horror history.

This episode is called 'Guess Who is Coming to Dinner', and it's the first Pigs in Space short in nearly 20 years. Muppet fan-favorite Pepé the King Prawn is playing the role of the chest-burster. And he comes tearing out of Captain Link Hogthrob's gut in all his bombastic glory. Don't worry, it's not as gory as it could be.

We are also treated to a squid like alien jumping on the face of Captain Link, a nod to the iconic Alien face-huggers. But guess what, 'It's none of our business!' If that isn't enough, this officially branded Muppets video gets off calling Miss Piggy a hussy. Oh, yes. How the times have changed.

Fans will likely be excited to see Pigs in Space return. It was a favorite part of the Muppet Show the first time around. And now, they get to mock modern day science fiction with an adult edge, cause the Muppets are edgy like that.

Kirk R. Thatcher, who has been with the Muppets a long time, and directed the Muppet Treasure Island Movie, is credited as the co-writer and director of this Pigs in Space episode. There are at least three more Pigs in Space episodes coming sometime in the bear future, which where all created as part of a Mini-series at Youtube Space LA last year. The next one will arrive before the end of this year and is a spoof of the George Clooney and Sandra Bullock sci-fi hit Gravity.
