Sinister Six Details; Sandman Compared to Godzilla

By B. Alan Orange — December 24th, 2014

The Guardians of Peace, the organization that has taken responsibility for the Sony Hack, have remained relatively quiet ever since Sony officially announced that The Interview will screen in over 300 Independent theaters starting Christmas Day. While the leak of Sony emails has seemed to cease, there are still stacks and stacks of documents various media outlets are sifting through. Most of the more damaging stuff has already been revealed to the public. But a few new pieces of news in interest to genre fans is still coming though. And today, we get a look at what Drew Goddard has planned for his Spider-Man spinoff The Sinister Six, which includes a skyscraper-sized Sandman who, at one time, may have been played by Tom Hardy.

At the time the email was written, Tom Hardy was in contention to play Doctor Strange for Marvel Studios and Disney. Drew Goddard wanted him to play Sandman in The Sinister Six instead, and had a plan of attack, which he hoped would sway the actor to his side. Tom Hardy chose neither project, instead signing on for a lead role in Warner Bros. and DC Comics Suicide Squad, which made more sense considering he had already appeared as Bane in the studios' The Dark Knight Rises.

The leaked email does give us a hint at what Drew Goddard has planned for The Sinister Six. Probably the most interesting element is the inclusion of Flint Marco, aka Sandman, whom Goddard compares to Godzilla. The super villains previously rumored for the movie did not include Sandman, with Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio hinted at for the line-up. These are the talking points the director sent to Sony's Amy Pascal, which he was going to use in getting Tom Hardy to sign on:

We're doing something different - it's time to celebrate the bad guys for once.

We're inspired by the classic team/mission of movies: Dirty Dozen, Magnificent Seven, Guns of Navarone. We want that spirit, that SWAGGER.

If the Spider-Man franchises the Beatles, then we're the Sex Pistols.

Flint Marco is gonna steal the show.

The character is pure id - the anarchic enthusiast of the team. A chance to have FUN while celebrating being bad.

Tom embodies that anarchy, that triumphant nihilism - we've seen him tap into that spirit before in roles like Bronson, but now we have the chance to crank the volume up to ELEVEN.

He's gonna storm through London at the end like God-f***ing-zilla. That is not purple prose. He's going to be AS TALL AS A SKYSCRAPER in the third act of the movie. What does Dr. Strange have? Magic tricks? [frick] you, magic tricks - we've got a skyscraper Tom Hardy knocking down buildings!!!!

Are you ready for a Godzilla-sized Sandman? Do you think Flint Marco is an interesting enough character to have in the movie? Or did we get enough of Thomas Haden Church as the character in Spider-Man 3?
