The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Sequel The Girl Who Played with Fire Still Moving Forward

By Brian Gallagher — January 2nd, 2012

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of several movies that opened in theaters over the holiday season, and it has earned just over $60 million since its release on December 20. Those numbers aren't as high as studio execs would have liked, which has lead to speculation that the inevitable sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, may not happen.

A Sony rep shot down those rumors earlier today, insisting that the sequel is still moving forward.

"[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book."

Steven Zaillian, who adapted The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from Stieg Larsson's novel, is currently writing the script for The Girl Who Played with Fire. However, David Fincher has not decided yet if he will return to direct The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig have deals in place for The Girl Who Played with Fire, and it is said that Sony is targeting a late 2013 release date for the sequel.
