Edwin A. Salt is getting a whole makeover. Angelina Jolie is in talks to replace Tom Cruise in Columbia's spy thriller, with screenwriter Kurt Wimmer redrafting the screenplay to suit the new female lead. The title will also change.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the thriller is about a CIA officer who must prove she is not a Russian sleeper spy out to assassinate the president. Phillip Noyce remains attached to Edwin A. Salt as director with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash producing.

The project has a long history, with directors coming and going, though Cruise has long been tethered to it. The deal for the switch began to fall into place about two weeks ago, though Columbia's Amy Pascal has been after Jolie for a project for more than two years.

No production date has been set.
