Anne Hathaway has taken the lead in an upcoming adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.

The play tells the tale of the courtship of Petruchio and the headstrong Katherina. At first, Katherina resists the relationship, but is persuaded by the persistent suitor after various psychological courting games. Anne Hathaway will most likely play the obdurate shrew.

The film is described as a modern-day take on the play set in mid-20th century Italy. The Iron Lady's Abi Morgan is providing the screenplay. No directors have been confirmed. Debra Hayward will be producing.

Anne Hathaway just won a Golden Globe for her role as Fantine in Tom Hooper's Les Miserables.

No production schedule has been released.
