New Christmas Movies You Can Stream

A Christmas Story Christmas Peter Billingsley
HBO Max

If you enjoy comedies, then Spirited should be right up your alley. The film will see Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds teaming up. This Christmas comedy is an adaptation of the classic novel A Christmas Carol, but with a fun new twist. Coming to Apple TV+, Spirited is an adventurous musical take on the Christmas classic tale of misery and woe – and with a cast of comedic geniuses, we can’t wait for it to drop on Apple TV+ on November 18th.

There is an exciting new release for fans of good old-fashioned Christmas classics. A Christmas Story Christmas is the sequel to A Christmas Story, which took 40 years to come to fruition. The film was released on HBO Max on November 17th, and it seems to be worth all the hype surrounding it. Peter Billingsley returns as an adult Ralphie, bringing his children home for the holidays. The trailer showcases familiar sets and scenes from the original film, now with a sweet premise about family and holiday traditions. The trailer alone is nostalgic, so we can’t wait to see this sequel to a beloved classic release!

HBO has an entertaining documentary releasing this season as well called Santa Camp, which explores the world of Santa Claus through a summer camp for professional Santas.

A Hallmark Romance

The Royal Nanny on Hallmark
Hallmark

Another meaningful holiday tradition is the Hallmark Christmas movies that play each year on TV. For the 2022 season, Hallmark promises 40 new holiday films to enjoy. While quite a few of these films have already premiered on the channel, there are certainly more to enjoy and catch this season if you haven’t seen them already.

Some highlights include a very meta holiday film about a romance between an actor and costume designer working on a Christmas romance movie. Lights, Camera, Christmas! sounds delightful for its fun twist on the genre. The Royal Nanny seems set to be a fun spin on the genre, too, with a classic Prince love interest. When M15 agent Claire goes undercover as the royal nanny, she must resist the handsome Prince Colin and keep her family safe.

New this season is Hallmark’s very first LGBTQ+ Christmas romance. The Holiday Sitter arrives on December 11th and features the talents of Jonathan Bennett and George Krissa. The film follows Sam, a workaholic bachelor who has to babysit his niece and nephew during the holidays and whose heart is stolen by handsome neighbor Jason. This film is an exciting new development for Hallmark, especially after the company pulled an ad featuring a lesbian couple from their network last year.

New Netflix Christmas Releases

Falling for Christmas on Netflix
Netflix

While we’ve already covered quite a few direct-to-streaming releases to expect this holiday season, we haven’t even gotten to giants like Netflix – whose roster is set to give Hallmark real competition this year. Previously, Netflix’s A Christmas Prince series charmed audiences and cemented the platform as a place to watch quality original Christmas rom-coms. Not to disappoint, this year, Netflix is pulling out all the stops.

Their first release this season was Falling For Christmas, which stars Lindsay Lohan. A classic trope-filled tale about memory loss and small-town romance, this sweet film is one you won’t want to miss if you enjoy a good Christmas rom-com. The newly released movie Christmas with You sees Freddie Prinze Jr. make a return to acting alongside Aimee Garcia. Prinze plays a widowed father of a young talented girl who gets her Christmas wish to meet her favorite pop star. Coming to the platform on November 24th is The Noel Diary, which follows an author returning to his hometown following his mother's passing.

For the whole family, Netflix has Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, a new animated film exploring the classic story. Like Spirited, this version also features original music. Although this next mention isn't a film, holiday baking shows are back in full swing. The Great British Baking Show: Holidays will have an entire season airing this year, and we’re crossing our fingers for another season of Nailed It! Holiday will come out soon as well.
