Audiences last saw Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton in the highly successful Apple TV+ crime drama Black Bird. According to a Deadline report, Egerton is back for his second project with the major streamer. He is set to star in the platform’s latest green-lit series Firebug, an investigative drama inspired by the infamous California arsonist John Leonard Orr.

The Apple Original reunites Egerton with several previous collaborators from Black Bird, including Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, executive producers Richard Plepler, Kary Antholis, Bradley Thomas, and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin. Egerton also serves as executive producer for Firebug.

The fictionalized series is written by Lehane but inspired by true events. Some of the events presented in truth media’s acclaimed “Firebug” podcast — hosted by Oscar and Emmy-winning Antholis — served as inspiration for the story and can be expected in the series. Firebug will revolve around a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (portrayed by Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.

The American crime drama Black Bird has continued to receive positive reception and praise since its July 8th premiere. Like Firebug, the miniseries was also based on a true story developed by Dennis Lehane, an award-winning author, and playwright. His transition into screenwriting came years into his career and led to his contribution to shows such as The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Mr. Mercedes. However, Black Bird represents a new zenith of his storytelling. Lehane takes the true recount from the autobiographical novel, In with the Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene with Hillel Levin and arranges it into a meticulous but coherent narrative that builds tension and grows like an avalanche.” If Firebug’s storytelling is anything like Black Bird, audiences should be in for a suspenseful and riveting character-driven tale from the upcoming series.

Black Bird’s success can also be attributed to the dynamic cast —which included Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser, and the late Ray Liotta — and their ability to portray quality performances. Egerton especially received high praise for his compelling portrayal of the main character, Jimmy Keene, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given he won a Golden Globe for his performance in Rocketman. With Egerton back at the helm of another Lehane series, their reunion is bound to yield another successful project.

Firebug is the fourth project hailing from Apple Studios and is produced by Imperative Entertainment. It joins a juggernaut list of Apple Studios projects, including the global hit Black Bird, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and The Wager, a freshly announced Apple Original feature based on the highly anticipated upcoming book by David Grann.
