Despite a lukewarm reception over the course of its opening weekend, where it pulled in a respectable $77 million, James Cameron's Avatar has proven to have quite a lot of staying power at the box office. On New Year's Day, its fifteenth in release, the exalted film, which some are calling a sci-fi masterpiece, managed to earn another $25 million. According to Variety, that brings its North American grosses to more than $300 million, placing it only behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as 2009's third highest grossing film of the year and counting.

Avatar's current worldwide gross is estimated to be around $800 million. An exact foreign tally won't become available until later Sunday evening. Avatar wasn't the only film to benefit from the yearend holiday. Sherlock Holmes pulled in a one day New Year's take of $14.9 million, pushing its domestic grosses to $117.2 million. The kid-friendly Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel wasn't far behind with its estimated New Year's earnings coming in at $13 million.

Analysts suspect that Avatar will be around for a while, and that it will give Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen quite a run for highest grossing film released in 2009. Avatar was directed by James Cameron and stars Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009.

I'm not saying they're seeing it because of the new stuff used, it's just that the ad campaigns have been making a big deal about that like it changes the quality of the movie. And no, while it was just invented, it's not gonna steep down in price. You gotta get some parent company to mass produce it first.

And the main character was flawed as hell. I mean he's genuinely loving living in his avatar with the navi, yet at the same time he trades crucial blueprints to a military colonel. It's like, hey dumbass, wtf do you think the colonel's gonna do with the data? seek a diplomatic solution? f*ck no. he and all characters like him that play both sides and are later surprised at the violent outcome are dumbasses for being that way. I mean is it really that hard to imagine what's gonna happen? I mean the stupidity of the lead character was too much.

Sorry, Slysnide, but you're wrong. Studios are investing in this technology. Resident Evil 4 and Jackass 3 are already shooting with Cameron's 3D cameras.

Why not Mr.Box-Office .you think the story of avatar wasnt that great so what was the reason that avatar is so succesful if not because of the technology.

The technology was so expensive because it had to be invented. They dont have to invent the same thing for a different movie so it wont be that pricy

Hey sly how do u think about that slogan "T4 With the New Technology invented by James Cameron" just kiddin

Sly you are gonna be hard pressed to find an original movie now a days. As my film teacher told me, "they're 88 keys on the piano, it's all about how you play them" Just every story told stems from greek or Shakespearean tales.

If Avatar was a combo of two really bad movies then I would agree and bash this movie. But DWW and Pocha were good films and the story telling held true to both but delivers it in a completely different package.

Structure and how it was executed was flawless, the dialogue how ever was not.

As for the quality of the film yes it is going to get worse. But if you have a good set up in your home for 1080p it will still look stunning. Plus any movie like this is meant for the big screen which is why I love movies like this because it makes going to the movie and experience and not just another movie to watch.

I don't understand why this is. After all, it was essentially a remake of "Dances With Wolves" & "Pocahontas" on an alien planet, was equally as predicatable, and tried to utilize visuals rather than storytelling to engage the audience. JC even said it was "Dances With Wolves" in space. Therefore, it could be attributed to JC's filmography...most specifically "Titanic" (1997). And given the gap, I bet that's why more and more people are seeing this movie to answer my own question. And plus it's gonna be downgraded over the next few months. From 3D-IMAX to conventional theaters, to blu-ray, to dvd, and finally to television. It's visually gonna get worse. I mean I saw it at IMAX in 3D and I wasn't even impressed by his lack of unique storytelling. I was quite frankly surprised that his big secret project was just another reimagined remake.

And movie studios aren't gonna be investing in his new pricy technology, for no matter how much easier you can make it behind the camera, it won't change the content of the film such that you make bigger profits. For example: T4 spent a $200,000,000 budget, and profited only $194,000,000. Had they used this technology, the profits wouldn't change, and it wouldn't have even broken even, so this new technique is gonna have to fall dramatically in price if it's to be used in future films. The jist of this being that just because JC used new technology isn't a reason to rush out and see this movie again and again.

the movie tickets are a little higher so what. The Ticket could cost 100 dollars but guess what not that many people would go to see it.The same thing with the 3 dollars.DArk knight made 158 mil in the first weekend .Avatar just made 77 mil.Probably because some people tought it wasnt worth the money. But the next weekend it made another 75 mil because the same people who tought it wasnt worth the money had to admit that they were wrong by facing the word of mouth.Im pretty sure it will surpass the worldwide gross from titanic. My english is not that good but i hope that my comment was understandable

It'd have to get 500 million to pass Titanic. I just see Avatar's steam slowly declining after a couple weeks. Good run though, even if the trailer was crappy. I still have not watched the movie, since I don't think it's worth my money but I hear good things about it.
