According to Variety, Los Angeles-based Avatar has ponied up a low-six-figure sum to acquire sci-fi action-thriller spec Lifers by tyro writing team Luke Borghi and Bart Rachmil.

Lifers, seen as a sci-fi twist on The Fugitive, centers on a boy and a girl who must solve a mystery involving a futuristic law system under which children born with a certain genetic code are automatically imprisoned.

Lifers is the first spec for Rachmil and Borghi, who have been assistant editors on several studio pictures.

Avatar is a private equity company set up to finance features under $10 million.
