The Banshee Chapter, which was released on VOD in December of 2013, has become the first 3D virtual reality movie made available for Facebook's Oculus Rift. The sci-fi horror thriller executive produced by Zachary Quinto is available on the platform starting today for free.

The film centers on a young, female journalist following the mysterious trail of a missing friend who had been experimenting with mind-altering chemicals developed in secret government drug tests. A fast-paced blend of fact and fiction, the film is based on real documents, actual test subject testimony, and uncovered secrets about programs run by the CIA. It is also loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft's From Beyond.

The film is distributed by XLrator Media and the Chimera VR software used to power the experience was created by Jamwix. The Oculus Rift is currently only available to developers, but a consumer release is expected to be announced for 2015. A new featurette has been released which offers a preview of The Banshee Chapter Oculus Rift experience and explains how it works. Check it out:
