In the 28 years since Beetlejuice first hit theaters, fans have been clammoring for a sequel. Over the past few years, there have been a number of exciting developments, with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder reportedly set to return as the title character and Lydia Deetz, with original Beetlejuice director Tim Burton returning to direct Beetlejuice 2 from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg. Still, we haven't heard anything official about the movie actually moving forward into production, and it seems that may not happen anytime soon.

The last we heard about this sequel was back in March, when Tim Burton revealed that Warner Bros. has approved the script and greenlit the production, with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and other unspecified cast members set to return. The filmmaker revealed that everything was ready, and they just needed to start filming, but it was unclear when that may take place. During a new interview with Collider, the filmmaker backtracked on those earlier comments, revealing that nothing is set in stone quite yet. Here's what he had to say below.

"This is the thing, it's something that I'm interested in, but there's so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I've talked to these people and they didn't wanna hear this so they just made up a story. But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I've talked to a few people. It's something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it's one of those films where it has to be right. It's not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it's not the Beetlejuice trilogy. So it's something that if the elements are right-because I do love the character and Michael's amazing as that character, so yeah we'll see. But there's nothing concrete yet."

It isn't known if there is still more work being done on the script, or what changed between now and March, when the filmmaker said that everything was in place for production to start. Warner Bros.' hasn't issued an official release date at this time, and it isn't even known if this will be his next movie. His latest movie, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is set for release by 20th Century Fox on September 30, and he is also attached to direct a live action Dumbo movie for Disney. We haven't had any updates on Dumbo since Tim Burton signed on to direct last March, so we don't know for sure when that will move forward.

As for Beetlejuice 2, nothing has has been confirmed as far as story details are concerned, but last October, original Beetlejuice star Geena Davis revealed she wanted to return for the sequel. The actress played the lovable ghost Barbara Maitland in the original, who, along with her deceased husband, must call on Beetlejuice to rid their home of some unwanted guests. It's possible that Geena Davis is one of the other unspecified cast members Tim Burton spoke to about returning, but we don't know for sure. We'll keep you posted on Beetlejuice 2 as soon as more details emerge. In the meantime, enjoy these cool fan made posters.
