Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn have signed on to star in the stage play adaptation Blackbird, which will be directed by Benedict Andrews in his feature debut.

The story centers on Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) and Una (Rooney Mara), former lovers who reunite 15 years after their torrid affair ended. While Ray has made a new life for herself, Una is still seeking answers, as this emotional thriller explores the consequences of damaged love.

David Harrower, who wrote the play this project is adapted from, is writing the screenplay, with Jean Doumanian (August: Osage County) and Patrick Daly producing. Shooting is scheduled to begin in the U.K. next summer.

Rooney Mara most recently starred in Her, and she will next be seen in Carol, Trash and Pan. Ben Mendelsohn, best known for his roles in Animal Kingdom, Killing Them Softly and The Place Beyond the Pines, will next be seen in Exodus: Gods and Kings.
