Back in September, principal photography got under way on Universal Pictures' long-awaited Untitled Matt Damon Bourne Sequel, a.k.a. Bourne 5, with producer Frank Marshall sharing the first photo of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. Production is still under way, with new photos arriving from the Kreuzberg, Germany set, thanks to We Got This Covered and several other sources. While all of these photos feature Matt Damon in action, one of them reveals his face has been bloodied quite badly, despite the smile on his face.

We last saw Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, which wrapped up a trilogy of adaptations based on Robert Ludlum's spy novels. After that adaptation hit theaters, Matt Damon said that he wouldn't come back for another follow-up unless director Paul Greengrass came back, and they had a story they both wanted to work on. Matt Damon revealed this fall that the script, co-written by Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse (Captain Phillips), is set in a "post-Snowden" world and will be shot all throughout Europe, with the shoot ending in Las Vegas.

While no specific story details have been released, the actor's "post-Snowden" statement is quite telling. The classified documents leaked by Edward Snowden, which revealed the National Security Agency's tendency to spy on the American public, created a firestorm of controversy, so it will be interesting to see how the filmmakers approach this hot-button issue, and how Bourne is involved. Matt Damon also revealed in September that Jason Bourne does have his memory back, but he still doesn't know everything about his past.

We do know that this movie won't feature any type of crossover with Universal's 2012 spinoff The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner as a different Treadstone agent named Aaron Cross. Universal is still developing a sequel to The Bourne Legacy, with Jeremy Renner slated to return, but it isn't known when that project will go into production. Universal has already set a July 29, 2016 release date for Bourne 5, putting this sequel up against STX Entertainment's The Space Between Us

New cast additions include Alicia Vikander, who had a turn in this summer's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel. Tommy Lee Jones is said to be playing a high-ranking CIA official. Vincent Cassel is playing the villain, described as a deadly assassin. All three characters' names have yet to be revealed.
