Women ruled the box office this weekend, making the big screen adaptation of the beloved HBO series Sex and the City number one on the charts. The long awaited continuation of the raunchy sitcom netted a hearty $55.7 million, making it one of the biggest outings of the year thus far. But don't feel so bad for Indy. In his second weekend, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made off with another $46 million. That puts its cumulative grosses at $216 million, making it the biggest film of this year.

This week's only other major contender was Universal's The Strangers. It came in third place with a healthy $20.7 million dollar take. Nipping on its heels with $14 million was Iron Man, which has raked in $276 million after five weeks on the chart.

The Will Ferrell produced comedy The Foot Fist Way managed to pull in $36,000 worth of ticket sales on a paltry four screens. Also making some headway on the arthouse circuit was Stuart Gordon's Stuck, which nabbed $10,200 on just two screens.

Next week, the women of Sex and the City will team up with Indiana Jones to take on the likes of Kung Fu Panda and Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
