Rom-coms are a great way to spend time. They make audiences laugh, gasp, and even cry during some over-the-top love confession, shortly before the film's finale. While the rom-com formula is continually evolving to appeal to newer generations, certain elements remain the same: an unlikely couple overcomes numerous obstacles to finally come together. 2015's Trainwreck brought acclaim to comedian Amy Schumer, who both wrote and starred in the film. Schumer's screenplay has since been praised for its witty, innovative, and overall hilarious plot; it shed light on modern dating's complexity when involving workaholic and emotionally unavailable individuals.

In 2022, comedian Billy Eichner followed in Schumer's footsteps with his own rom-com, Bros. This LGBTQIA+ rom-com parallels many of the troupes and scenarios used in Trainwreck (they were both produced by Judd Apatow, after all), and similarly to it, manages to surprise audiences with a heartwarming good time. Here are some elements of Bros that will surely win over Trainwreck fans.

Unlikely Union

Bros 3
Universal Pictures

Trainwreck has writer Amy Townsend living her best life, partying, and casually dating without any intention of ever settling down. As one of her assignments, Amy has to interview sports doctor Aaron Connors, a workaholic with a dry sense of humor. Despite their substantial personality differences, they start dating. In Bros, Bobby Lieber is a podcast radio host and curator for an LGBTQIA+ history museum. Bobby prides himself in his cynicism towards gay life and notably, his bachelor status. One night, Bobby meets Aaron Shepard (both films have an Aaron love interest), a lawyer who arranges postmortem services for clients during the day and leads a party boy status during the night.

Though they seem like the unlikeliest of duos, the two men go on several dates and learn to enjoy their respective differences, eventually falling in love. The similarities between the couples are obvious, and so is their chemistry. Just like Aaron slowly wins over Amy's heart with his caring nature, Aaron wins Bobby over with his softer, affectionate side beneath a seemingly shallow exterior.

Embarrassing Moments

Bros 5
Universal Pictures

Much of the humor in both Trainwreck and Bros is the embarrassing moments that occur between the respective couples. From their awkward first dates, their first time sleeping together, and overall messy misunderstandings, the humor drives the narrative of both relationships. One of the funniest moments in Bros is when Bobby meets Aaron's family over Christmas. From his chatty demeanor, his conviction in defending gay rights, and his overall confidence in his identity, Bobby makes for one of the funniest "meet the family" moments in the rom-com genre. A noteworthy aspect of this dinner scene is its ability to address a serious issue with a comedic tone; Bobby clashing with Aaron's family is a reflection of an inherent issue with Bobby and Aaron's relationship; family is extremely important to Aaron and them accepting Bobby is an unspoken, non-negotiable factor in their relationship's longevity.

Relationship Insecurities

Bros 10
Universal Pictures

In Trainwreck, Amy has many insecurities over getting into a relationship with Aaron after being told throughout her entire childhood that monogamy isn't realistic. This sabotages her relationship with Aaron as Amy resorts to former habits and rebuffs Aaron's genuine affection. In Bros, both Bobby and Aaron originally get into a relationship with short-term expectations; they're open to dating others and ending their connection at any given moment. Bobby and Aaron do eventually grow on each other and work towards a monogamous relationship, but the insecurities remain for both men. Bobby often voices his belief that he's not Aaron's type; he feels his personality is too exuberant compared to Aaron's tame, introverted nature, and Bobby suspects Aaron is still in love with his former classmate, Josh. Similarly to Amy, Bobby feels he is too different or simply not the right match for Aaron. Aaron feels that despite Bobby's interest in him, he pales in comparison to Bobby's assertive personality regarding his identity and career; Bobby has pursued every aspect of himself, while Aaron has settled for socially normative alternatives.

Happily Ever After

Bros 2022 (2)
Universal Pictures

Just like every other existing rom-com, Bros has a happily ever after following many misunderstandings and arguments between its leading couple. Trainwreck has Amy finally overcoming all her relationship insecurities and professing her love to Aaron in a spectacle setting basketball court: it is a cute and heartfelt turn for a previously cynical protagonist. In retrospective, Bobby uses his big, spotlight moment to confess his love to Aaron through song, which is a bold move by a character who has time after time declared himself anti-love and forever single. Both films provide audiences with a universally enjoyable happily ever after.
