Actress Catherine Keener has joined the cast of Captain Phillips for Columbia Pictures and director Paul Greengrass.

The project is based on the true story of Maresk Alabama captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), who sacrificed himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates, so he could save the lives of his crew. He spent three days in captivity before being rescued by a Navy SEAL team in 2009. Catherine Keener will play Phillips' wife, Andrea Phillips, who never lost faith in her husband throughout the arduous ordeal.

Paul Greengrass is directing Captain Phillips from a screenplay by Billy Ray, which is adapted from Richard Phillips' own book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea. Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti, Scott Rudin, and Michael De Luca are producing.

No production schedule was given for Captain Phillips.
