X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed last week that Channing Tatum will play Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse, although his deal is not finalized yet. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Cannes Film Festival, to promote his new drama Foxcatcher, the actor revealed that his deal is almost done, and he's dying to play the Cajun mutant.

"I hope to be joining -- everything's not done yet. I've obviously been in talks, and we're on the one yard line. I'm always afraid of being like, 'Yes it's totally happening' and then it doesn't happen. It's always really awkward. But yeah, I'm dying to do it."

Channing Tatum first spoke about his desire to play Gambit back in September, revealing that the mutant is his favorite superhero. The character, Remy LeBeau, hails from New Orleans, while Channing Tatum grew up in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, and his father comes from Louisiana. Then the actor revealed in April that he met with producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the role. It was also announced last week that Gambit would get his own spin-off movie after X-Men: Apocalypse.

Remy LeBeau/Gambit was played by Taylor Kitsch in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Channing Tatum will next be seen in 22 Jump Street (June 13), Jupiter Ascending (July 18) and Foxcatcher (November 14).
