While Will Smith has made his apologies for the slapping of Chris Rock during Sunday’s Oscars, Rock himself had not commented on the incident since leaving the ceremony in a shaken and confused state as to what had occurred. The comedian has briefly addressed what happened during his comedy show in Boston on Wednesday, kicking off the show with a very short mention that the show would not feature any content about it, but future shows likely would. You can see the clip below.

In what has been called “the slap heard around the world,” Rock was hit in the face by Will Smith following a joke made at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, about her short hairstyle. After Pinkett-Smith was seen to be less than impressed with the ribbing, Smith, who had previously been seen laughing along with other audience members, walked up to Rock, slapped him, then returned to his seat, where he continued to shout at the comedian. Over the following days, statements were made by the Academy, Smith, and a short comment was posted on social media by Pinkett-Smith, but the short message at the beginning of his comedy routine was the first comment by Rock. He said:

“I don’t have a bunch of sh*t about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend. I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I’ll talk about that sh*t. And it will be serious and funny.”

While the dust has now settled on the momentary chaos that dropped on the 94th Academy Awards, there is still the possibility of action being taken against Smith by the Academy in response to his breaking of its code of conduct. While Rock has already declined to bring criminal assault charges against the Oscar winner, the Academy has made it clear that there will likely be repercussions.

The Academy issued a lengthy statement as they started their investigation, which began, “The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.” Later in the same statement, they acknowledged that Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident, but he refused.

Although Smith has made a full public apology to Chris Rock via social media, which followed the one he made to the Academy and his fellow nominees during his Best Actor acceptance speech, there is no doubt that there is still going to be some kind of reprimand coming Smith’s way from the Academy, but what form that will take is currently unknown. While it has been said it is unlikely the actor will be asked to return his award, he could find himself given a suspension for a to-be-determined amount of time for breaking the rules of conduct that the Academy published a few years ago.
