Screenwriter Eric Roth has signed on to write Cleopatra for Sony Pictures. Brian Helgeland wrote the initial draft, which is adapted from Stacy Schiff's book, Cleopatra: A Life.

Angelina Jolie has long been attached to star as Cleopatra. The movie will tell the Egyptian Pharaoh's tale from a woman's perspective, portraying her as a cunning strategist and politician.

Back in May, we reported that David Fincher is in talks to direct. It seems he is still circling the project, even though a deal has not been finalized yet. Eric Roth wrote the screenplay for David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so perhaps the writer's involvement may persuade David Fincher to officially sign on.

James Cameron was initially set to direct Cleopatra, before he stepped away from the project last November. No production schedule was released for Cleopatra.
