Back in October, a report surfaced that the new thriller God Particle from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot is actually Cloverfield 3, and that Paramount is quitely developing a number of of other films that will connect to the Cloverfield universe. That report was never confirmed by the studio, but it seems we may have gotten a round-about confirmation, with the studio setting an October 27, 2017 release date for a new Cloverfield movie in IMAX, while, at the same time, the studio yanked God Particle from its release schedule. It seems likely that God Particle and this new Cloverfield movie are one in the same, with the studio likely planning a new title for this project in what amounts to be a simple release date shift.

God Particle had originally been set for release on February 24, 2017, which would have gone up against Universal's Get Out and Lionsgate's Rock Dog. Now in its new pre-Halloween release on October 27, 2017 it will square off against Lionsgate's Saw Legacy, the studio's first installment in the Saw franchise since 2010's Saw 3D. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Paramount wouldn't comment on the release date shift, but it's possible we may hear something official about God Particle/Cloverfield 3 very soon.

Way back in January, Paramount revealed that a languishing project which had previously been known as Valencia and The Cellar was being changed to 10 Cloverfield Lane. While that film is not a direct sequel to the 2008 thriller Cloverfield, it is set in the same universe. The film, which starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., earned $72 million domestic and $108.2 million worldwide, although no budget figures were disclosed. That movie, which reverted back to Paramount after its specialty division Paramount Insurge went under, went through some reshoots from a rewritten script to bring this story into the Cloverfield universe, so it's possible that perhaps this release date delay is to under go some reshoots.

After news of the God Particle/Cloverfield 3 connection broke, stars David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw revealed in separate interviews that they didn't know anything about a connection to the Cloverfield world. With a release date shift of eight months, that gives the filmmakers plenty of time for reshoots, but it hasn't been confirmed if reshoots are happening or not. Shortly after the 10 Cloverfield Lane reveal was made, J.J. Abrams said that Bad Robot is already planning Cloverfield 3, although he wouldn't offer any details about that project.

Bad Robot and Paramount reportedly brought on writers Daniel Casey and Damien Chazelle to rewrite the script going into the reshoots, and while J.J. Abrams said that 10 Cloverfield Lane isn't exactly a sequel to Cloverfield, he called the project a "blood relative" to the original movie. God Particle follows a team of astronauts who make a shocking discovery and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality. This new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the "shocking discovery" is that the Earth has disappeared after a scientific experiment, and as they discover a space shuttle coming towards them, they must determine whether or not they are enemies or friends. David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Ziyi Zhang, Chris O'Downd, Aksel Hennie and John Ortiz lead the cast. Julius Onah (The Girl Is In Trouble) directs from a script by Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) and Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street). Hopefully we'll get confirmation on God Particle's inclusion into the Cloverfield universe very soon.
