While something else that happened at the Academy Awards largely dominated the news coverage of the event, there were some other very big moments to come from the ceremony. The hit film CODA had a particularly good night with its Oscar win for Best Picture, one of film's most prestigious awards. It's notable for many reasons, which includes becoming the first film to win the award that features a predominantly Deaf cast. CODA's win over Netflix's The Power of the Dog also makes Apple TV+ the first streaming service to have a film win Best Picture.

The accolades acquired by CODA at the Oscars have generated a lot of interest from people who hadn't yet checked out Apple TV+. Variety reports that subscription numbers have gone up by 25% in the days since CODA's big night, with the addition of subscribers also resulting in viewership numbers for CODA going up by 300% compared to the previous week. Because Apple TV+ offers a seven-day free trial, it's possible that this influx of subscribers will be canceling the service after watching the film, but there will certainly be many who also end up deciding that the service is worth an extra $4.99 per month. It just remains to be seen what the ratio will be.

Best Picture was not the only big win for CODA at the Oscars on Sunday night. Troy Kotsur was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film while Siân Heder was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. CODA won all three of these awards, making Kotsur the first Deaf male actor in history to receive an Oscar, along with a BAFTA, SAG Award, and Critics Choice Award. The movie had previously impressed critics and attendees at Sundance where Apple picked up the rights for $25 million.

“This is amazing to be here on this journey. I cannot believe I’m here. Thank you so much to all the members of the academy for recognizing my work," Kotsur said in his Oscar acceptance speech. “It’s really amazing that our film CODA has reached out worldwide. It even reached all the way to the White House. And they invited the cast of CODA to visit and have a tour of the White House. We met our president, Joe, and Dr. Jill [Biden], and I was planning on teaching them some dirty sign language, but Marlee Matlin told me to behave myself. So don’t worry, Marlee, I won’t drop any F-bombs in my speech today. Instead, I really want to thank all of the wonderful Deaf theater stages where I was allowed and given the opportunity to develop my craft as an actor. Thank you."

CODA Has Been a Hit With Critics and Audiences

CODA is written and directed by Sian Heder and stars Emilia Jones, Eugenio Derbez, Troy Kotsur, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Daniel Durant, and Marlee Matlin. The film follows Jones as the only hearing member of a deaf family who attempts to assist them with their struggling fishing business while pursuing her own dreams of becoming a singer. Its accolades have been tremendous with the film earning a 94% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes in addition to its high viewership on Apple TV+, not to mention its Oscars and other award wins.
