We reported in early June that a top actor was circling David Fincher's latest film project and now he has been confirmed for the lead role. Deadline New York is reporting that Daniel Craig has been confirmed to star in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Craig will portray journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the film and it was said that he will start work on the film in Sweden almost immediately after he's done filming Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens. Craig also has a deal locked in to star in the two sequels to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

David Fincher is directing the film from a script by Steven Zaillian, which will be based off the novel by Stieg Larsson. The novel was already adapted into Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which was released stateside in March. The Swedish sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, hit American theaters on July 9.
