Director James Gunn is currently hard at work doing post production on the Marvel Phase 3 adventure Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is no doubt exciting. As many know, no matter how busy the director is, he always finds time to interact with his fans on social media. On Sunday, Gunn took some time out of his day to answer some fan questions, and he revealed that he has had the opportunity to direct DC Comics movies in the past.

Gunn did the Q&A on his Facebook page on Sunday afternoon, and at one point, the subject of the DC Extended Universe came up. A fan asked if James Gunn has seen the current DC movies, and if he had any interest in directing a DC movie. As it turns out, the director has already had the opportunity to direct a DC Comics movie in the past, but he decided against it. Here is what he had to say.

"I thought there was some amazing action sequences in Man of Steel, but I haven't seen the other two films. I've had opportunities to make DC films, but I haven't said yes to anything, and not sure I would at this time."

Gunn didn't elaborate on exactly what property it was that he passed up on, and there is almost no clue given, so it is borderline impossible to even reasonably speculate. It isn't even clear if he passed up on a DC movie before the current DCEU movies, or if it was prior in the Ryan Reynolds/Green Lantern era. Gunn did go on to reveal what DC Comics characters he would like to tackle if he ever decided to go down that road. Here is what he had to say.

"I've talked before about which projects appeal to me the most IF I was into making one, and it's always Shazam and Metal Men and Swamp Thing and Jonah Hex and a few other DC IPs I've enjoyed for a great deal of my life."

We know that Shazam! is currently happening with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson set to star as Black Adam, and Jonah Hex bombed in spectacular fashion a handful of years back. Josh Brolin has said that he would be willing to give Jonah Hex another shot though, so who knows? As for Metal Men or Swamp Thing? Those are wide open. Of the two, a Swamp Thing movie would seem much more likely at some point and would fit very well with Gunn's sensibilities as a director, but again, these opportunities aren't on the table, they are just properties and characters he enjoys.

James Gunn is known for only taking on projects that he feels particularly strongly about, which is why he is currently doing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Kevin Feige has stated that there will be a third Guardians installment at some point, but Gunn has said he isn't sure if he will be back for that, which is fair, as he is probably a bit worn out from both of the massive productions from the first two movies. So will we see a James Gunn/Swamp Thing DCEU movie in the future? Probably not, but it's fun to think about. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set for release on May 5, 2017.
