Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is in talks to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in Deepwater Horizon for Lionsgate. If a deal is finalized, The Wrap reveals she will play the female lead, Andrea Fleytas. The project is based on the true story of the 2010 BP oil rig explosion that killed 11 crew members and resulted in the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Mark Wahlberg is starring as Mike Williams, an electrician on the oil rig. Gina Rodriguez's Andrea Fleytas was overseeing the oil rig's navigation machinery when she noticed that no one had issued a distress signal. After she tried to contact the Coast Guard, she was reprimanded for her actions. Gina Rodriguez beat out Kristen Stewart for the coveted role.

Peter Berg is directing from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan, who previously worked with the director on The Kingdom. It isn't known when production may begin, but Lionsgate has issued a September 30, 2016 release date. Gina Rodriguez got her start in acting with a role in the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, before landing the lead role in the 2013 indie Filly Brown. She recently won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the title character in The CW's first-year hit series Jane the Virgin.
