‘Despicable Me 2’ a Holiday Hit with $34.3 Million, ‘The Lone Ranger’ Bombs with $9.6 Million

Despicable Me 2 takes in $34.3 million on Wednesday Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment got the holiday weekend fireworks started early at the box office, with the animated sequel Despicable Me 2 taking in an impressive $34.3 million on Wednesday.

The comedy, featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove, is projected to take in $120 million over the five-day weekend in 3,957 theaters. It has already taken in $65.9 million in select international markets for a global total of $100.2 million, from a $76 million budget.

Disney's The Lone Ranger opened significantly lower yesterday, taking in only $9.6 million in 3,904 theaters. The Western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer may not even break the $45 million mark over the long weekend, roughly $20 million less than the $65 million that Disney projected for its five-day total. While the exact budget has not been released, it has been said to be between $215 and $250 million.

The stand up comedy concert movie Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain opened strongly with $4.7 million in just 876 theaters, already surpassing its miniscule $2.5 million budget in just one day.

Stay tuned for the full box office estimates on Sunday.

Despicable Me 2 was released July 3rd, 2013.

@john-m That's not an excuse though. 5 stars is what I give a movie that I liked enough for that kind a rating, but certainly not every movies that I see though, lol :P . As for the foreign box offices numbers, you do realize that when you look at what the U.S. box office numbers and foreign box office number combined(world wide box office numbers), its going to be quite a bit higher then both domestic and foreign box office numbers, right? It's going to be interesting to find out that The Lone Ranger's box office results will be by at least Monday July 8th, the end of this weekend-beginning of next week.

@themoviefanatic: Still trying to make excuses. I guess that is fine. I knew you would do that weeks and months ago, along with I knew without a doubt that you would give the film 5 stars.

On Thursday The Lone Ranger took in a about 9.85 million which is a tiny bit better than what it earned on Wednesday in 9.7, and very underwhelming total of 19.5 million. I know it can be hard for you to face reality, but the Lone Ranger is going to be a Box Office bomb whether you add in the foreign numbers or not.

@TheObserver I think it will make money overseas. The way I see it is that, its going to make something overseas and not nothing at all. Yes, I do know that the movie cost $250 million to make, and luckily its budget isn't what it once was which was $275-$300 million or more. That would have made it as bad as what Pirates 3's production budget was.

@kingbrady Just saying, westerns are still great, Disney just doesn't know how to make em. This Is the End was great, I'd go see that if I were you, or The Heat.

@corey Yeah, see, it still has a chance at making more money overseas. If it and Desp*cable Me 2 and The Lone Ranger had not been released on the same day, and Desp*cable Me 2 and the Lone Ranger had been released on two different dates instead of on the same date, then The Lone Ranger would have started off making more money then it has so far.

@themoviefanatic And what if it DOESNT make money overseas? You do know that this movie cost around $250 million right ? so not only it must reach this number but go wayy over it if Disney wants to call it a Good investment.

@corey Oh I trust you lol

@themoviefanatic That is NOT the only reason why, lol. I'm talking US numbers. I'm talking this WEEKEND's numbers. I'm not talking about over-seas or anywhere else. I told you that DM2 would smash The Lone Ranger at the first weekend's box office. And it's already dominating.

@TheObserver I've been dealing with Sean on MW since like 2008. He doesn't even realize I'm pulling his leg, trust me.

@TheObserver Oh, No there's no denial going on with me here :) . The movie has done poorly here in the U.S. so far, but this first weekend isn't over for it quite yet. Plus, There's still the fact that this movie has yet to be released in a lot of other countries, and it being released in other countries has already started though-> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210819/releaseinfo .

                          @stefanos Yes, I couldn't agree more :) .

@john-m I'm not naive though. That's a big misconception you and others have about me on this website. The Lone Ranger still has yet to be released in other countries, so it still has a chance at making more money worldwide and overseas then it has here in the U.S. alone. Take a look at the link I gave TheObserver, it shows that The Lone Ranger still has yet to be released in other countries and make money in other countries in the box office.

@TheObserver: Yeah I admit I mess with @themoviefanatic a lot, but it is so easy sometimes, because he is so naive and can be frustrating as well. I also stand being blind/in denial about a film thinking, wishing and hoping a film would do better at the Box Office. It has happened many times from Enemy At The Gates to Dredd, but eventually you have to face reality about either the quality of the film or the completion the film is going up against. For The Lone Ranger it is both. The film sucks and it is going up against Desp*cable Me 2 as well as Monsters University, The Heat, World War Z and Man of Steel. I guess I should mention White House Down, but that film is basically going to be a failure as well. Anyway there is a ton of competition and better films out that The Lone Ranger has to go up against. I think if the film came out in the late winter/early spring or late summer/early fall the film would do much better at the box office.

@themoviefanatic Do not listen them, they judge one movie, how much money will make...The Lone Ranger, was a great movie, with all inside, action, comedy, adventure, drama, all!!!!!! Few movies have it all,and if one movie have it all, that means for me,a great movie.!

@themoviefanatic: LOL! You keep making excuses for why The Longer Ranger is and will do so bad domestically. I believe The Lone Ranger was release worldwide. Whether it was released worldwide or not The Lone Ranger was not going to beat Desp*cable Me 2, and is not an excuse for how bad the film is or how bad it is and will do at the box office.

@corey The only reason why i turned out to be wrong was because, the Lone Ranger didn't get released everywhere worldwide on the same day.
