HBO has ordered two pilots from The Wire creator David Simon, the first of which, entitled The Deuce, has brought on James Franco to star as twins. Breaking Bad director Michelle Maxwell MacLaren has been set to take the helm on the pilot episode, which explores the 1970s porn industry centered in New York City's Times Square. The second pilot, which doesn't have a title yet, is set in present day, following politicians on Capitol Hill and exploring how money influences the government. Here's what HBO programming president Michael Lombardo had to say in a statement regarding both of David Simon's projects.

"We are thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with preeminent producer David Simon, whose keen eye and visceral perspective on today's socio-economic ills have set him apart from all others. No one else creates with such authenticity, integrity and brilliant realism. We are so fortunate to support David's efforts and to reap the benefits of his distinctive voice."

Production on The Deuce will begin in October, centering on the legalization of X Rated movies in 1970s New York, with the story spanning through the 1980s porn industry. The series is inspired by twin brothers who served as mafia fronts for the porn industry in Times Square, with James Franco set to play both brothers. Here's what David Simon, who wrote the pilot episode script with George Pelecanos, had to say about the series in his statement.

"We're interested in what it means when profit is the primary metric for what we call society. In that sense, this story is intended as neither prurient nor puritan. It's about a product, and those human beings who created, sold, profited from and suffered with that product."

David Simon, George Pelecanos and James Franco will serve as executive producers on The Deuce along with Richard Price, who is credited on subsequent scripts, and pilot director Michelle Maxwell MacLaren. The second project is a collaboration between David Simon and famed journalist Carl Bernstein, who will co-produce the pilot. Ed Burns, who worked with David Simon on The Wire, and William F. Zorzi are also producing. William F. Zorzi is a former political journalist for the Baltimore Sun, who worked with David Simon on his new HBO miniseries David Simon, debuting August 16.
