Back in March, director Fede Alvarez brought his Evil Dead remake to South by Southwest, where he excitedly revealed that Evil Dead 2 is already in the works.

Today, screenwriter Rodo Sayagues Mendez dropped a bombshell on the horror world, claiming both he and Fede Alvarez are no longer involved in the sequel.

"Look, I am sorry to tell you this, but that movie won't happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don't know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not a part of the project."

We haven't heard anything concrete about the sequel since that initial announcement in March, so it isn't known if producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell still plan on moving forward.

The news comes just days after Fede Alvarez confirmed that Sam Raimi is directing Army of Darkness 2, which brings back Bruce Campbell as the beloved Ash. The actor revealed at WonderCon that the story may bring Ash together with Jane Levy's Mia from the Evil Dead remake, but that hasn't been confirmed.
