Director Jon M. Chu Returns for ‘G.I. Joe 3’

Jon M. Chu signs on to direct G.I. Joe RetaliationG.I. Joe Retaliation director Jon M. Chu has come aboard to direct G.I. Joe 3, which is in the early stages of development at Paramount.

We reported in April that the studio was moving ahead with the sequel, just days after G.I. Joe Retaliation opened with $132 million worldwide in its first few days of release. The sequel has earned $365 million worldwide over its full theatrical run.

What isn't quite clear yet is who will be writing G.I. Joe 3. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote G.I. Joe Retaliation, but it is not known if they are in talks to return. No cast members have been locked in yet, but, given the success of G.I. Joe Retaliation, don't be surprised if Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, and the rest of the Joes sign up for another mission.

Jon M. Chu is also attached to Masters of the Universe at Universal, but there hasn't been much motion on that project for some time now.

G.I. Joe 3 comes to theaters in 2016.

          I take it that the second film wasn't that great, looks to me that the writers are to blame. You can't make a film look good with a bad script.

          It needs someone that has written screenplays for the last 30 years.

          Look at the Transformer films, they are so different from the source material. It's sad to say that both series need to be rebooted.

            It was a smash bang feature, the first was not out witted or out done in style or anything, where Sommers wore its sensitivity and narrative on its sleeve this had none and didn't need it for what its worth, the actors are there to shine out as they bust some asses.

              The 1st movie was a better film with smaller names. The 2nd was a horrible film WITH big names. Sounds to me like the 3rd film will for 12-year olds just like the 2nd. It's OK to make a decent film Hollywood. You're allow to do this.

                      Pure crap. The the below average first film was better than Retaliation. Someone needs to stop this scrap the project and films starting over from scrap, and paying respect to the tone and feel of the comics and the characters from the comics.

                        Retaliation wasn't half bad for a movie based on action figures. At least it wasn't as unwatchable as the first one. I don't mind him coming back and it'd be nice to have some constancy with the directors.

                        @dbzfan91 I second that.

                              I hope they show Duke was captured and is being help by Cobra in 3. BUT, Destro "died" from what was shown, and I hate the fact a major character was killed.

                                    seriously who writes for the movieweb? i mean we all know that Duke may not have been killed but why would he vanish leaving his dog tags and not reappear in the 2nd film in the end? Flashback scenes are redundant at this point. They have to bring back Destro/Cobra Commander and have Cobra on screen a bit more
