Writer Maria Maggenti has been hired by Lionsgate to pen the screenplay for director Kenny Ortega's Dirty Dancing remake.

The original coming-of-age drama followed a young woman (Jennifer Grey) who joins her upscale family for a vacation in the Catskills. There, she meets Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), the resident dance instructor who teaches her about life and dance. It is not known how closely this new version will adhere to its predecessor, or if it will utilize the same 1963 time period.

Lionsgate is moving fast to get Dirty Dancing before the camera, hoping to find the same success the original did. The writing job on Dirty Dancing was highly coveted, with Maria Maggenti landing the gig due in part to her work on the teen girl fantasy Monte Carlo.
