Jennifer Lawrence is joining forces with her Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence and producer James Cameron on The Dive for 20th Century Fox. The project is based on the true story of free divers Francisco "Pipin" Ferraras and his wife Audrey Mestre, who both tried to go as deep into the ocean as possible on just a single breath of air. Jennifer Lawrence is playing Audrey Mestre, who passed away in 2002 while trying to break her world record of diving 557.7 feet underwater. Her husband Francisco "Pipin" Ferraras dove to that same depth in tribute to his late wife, a dive which was filmed by James Cameron.

Way back in 2006, James Cameron actually planned on directing this movie himself, working from a script from his Avatar co-writer Laeta Kalogridis. In March 2012, Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Green Lantern) was attached to direct, but the project never got off the ground. J. Michael Straczynski (Thor) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay.

James Cameron is producing with his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Rae Sanchini and Barry Josephson. No production schedule was given at this time. Jennifer Lawrence is currently prepping to return as Mystique in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse. She will next be seen in Serena, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Joy, all slated for release later this year. The actress worked with Francis Lawrence on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.
