Marvel is reportedly close to finalizing a deal with Joaquin Phoenix to play Doctor Strange, according to a new report from Collider.

We reported just over a month ago that Joaquin Phoenix had entered negotiations to play Doctor Steven Strange, but the fact that his deal still hasn't been finalized lead to a number of other casting rumors, including this week's report that Jack Huston is in contention for the coveted role. However, Collider reveals there is no truth to Jack Huston being in contention, since Joaquin Phoenix is very close to signing on.

It isn't known how many movies Joaquin Phoenix is signing on for, since most actors in Marvel Studios movies typically sign on for multiple movies at once. For instance, Samuel L. Jackson signed on for nine movies, while Chris Evans' deal is for six films. The site speculates that the deal is taking a long time to finalize because the actor wants to make sure there is enough flexibility to pursue other projects on top of his duties for Marvel.

It's worth noting that Joaquin Phoenix was rumored to be up for the Lex Luthor role in Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a role that eventually went to Jesse Eisenberg.
