In just a few short hours, fans across the country will finally be able to see Doctor Strange on the big screen during Thursday preview screenings, in what is shaping up to be a huge opening weekend. While doing press for the movie, director Scott Derrickson teased a major deleted scene that was filmed, but didn't make the final cut. The director says that this scene was taken directly from the comics, which he hopes will be included on the Blu-ray and DVD.
Collider recently spoke with Scott Derrickson, who revealed that a scene was shot that delves into Stephen Strange's back story. This scene actually helps explain why Stephen Strange became a doctor in the first place. Here's what the director had to say about this scene.
"We shot a scene... you know, in the comics, if you know the comics well, Strange has a backstory where his sister died when he was young, and that she drowned. That had a real significant effect, and was probably instrumental in him becoming a doctor. And we shot that scene, and I loved that scene. It was a really great scene. It just didn't fit in the movie. It felt like... it just didn't work. But the self-contained scene by itself, I thought it was great. And Lulu Wilson, who was the little girl in Ouija and was in Deliver Us From Evil, played the girl. So I hope that scene's on the DVD."
Doctor Strange is already off to a strong start at the international box office, taking in an impressive $86 million during its overseas debut last weekend. Early box office tracking numbers put Doctor Strange's opening weekend around $75 million, but other projections have it over $80 million. This superhero adventure is already a bona fide hit with critics, with an impressive 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
We reported yesterday that Doctor Strange has already started outselling Marvel Cinematic Universe hits such as Ant-Man and Thor, but we won't know until Sunday how this superhero adventure fares with moviegoers around the country. Doctor Strange is also expected to return in Avengers: Infinity War, which begins filming this coming January, with the studio setting a May 4, 2018 release date. Hopefully we'll learn about more Doctor Strange deleted scenes as this superhero adventure hits theaters.
