Actor Kris Kristofferson has joined the cast of Dolphin Tale, a new 3D movie that's currently shooting in Florida, according to Variety.

The story revolves around the true story of a dolphin named Winter, who lost her tail when it was caught in a crab trap. An 11-year-old boy befriends the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquariam and rallies his friends and the town around the dolphin, with a doctor creating a prosthetic tail so she may survive.

Kris Kristofferson will portray the father of Harry Connick Jr.'s character, a single father who runs the aquarium. The dolphin, Winter, will play herself. Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman also star.

Charles Martin Smith is directing the movie from a script by Karen Janszen. Production is currently under way on location in Clearwater, Florida.
