Doug Liman is in early discussions to direct the action-thriller Narco Sub for 20th Century Fox.

Tony Scott had been attached to direct back in 2011, and there was talk in February that Joe Carnahan was circling the project before Doug Liman came aboard. The title refers to small submarines that South American cartels use to smuggle their illegal drugs into the U.S. Our report from 2011 revealed that the story was said to be in the same vein as Tony Scott's thrillers Crimson Tide and Man on Fire, although no specific plot details have been released.

David Guggenheim (Safe House) wrote the screenplay, which he developed with producer Simon Kinberg and his Genre Films company. Steve Asbell and Aditya Sood are overseeing the production.

Doug Liman recently wrapped production on the sci-fi action thriller Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise, which hits theaters June 6, 2014.
