Back in May, production began on Christopher Nolan's new World War II thriller Dunkirk, which is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2017. We've seen a number of videos and photos from the set over the past few months, but today the teaser trailer has arrived with our first look at footage from this drama. While this 60-second trailer doesn't reveal too much, it's possible that Dunkirk could be one of next summer's most highly-anticipated movies.

Christopher Nolan is directing Dunkirk from his own original screenplay. The cast includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and One Direction singer Harry Styles, who makes his feature film debut. The supporting cast also includes Cillian Murphy, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney in this World War II thriller.

Based on real events, the story behind Dunkirk takes place during WWII, and is set during the historical evacuation of the Northern French City. The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema (Interstellar, Spectre, The Fighter), production designer Nathan Crowley (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Trilogy), editor Lee Smith (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Elysium), costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (Inception, Bullets Over Broadway), and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson (Mad Max: Fury Road). The first photos that surfaced from the set didn't feature any of the main stars, but the production is said to begin on the exact spot in France where this story took place, 76 years ago.

Dunkirk will be a large-scale production for Warner Bros. Studios. The director will be shooting the movie using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film. Christopher Nolan wants maximum image quality, and high-impact immersion in telling his next story. Dunkirk begins shooting in May, and will utilize many of the real locations where this true piece of war history happened.

Christopher Nolan is producing the project with longtime partner Emma Thomas. Dunkirk will go up against Universal's Girl Trip, 20th Century Fox's The Story of Ferdinand and EuropaCorp's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets on July 21, 2017. Take a look at the first trailer for Dunkirk and stay tuned for more as we get closer to this highly-anticipated release.
