Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo and Tom Wilkinson are all in talks to join director Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden Project, alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is playing Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who leaked classified information to the public, while Shailene Woodley is set to play his girlfriend, Lindsay Mills. Scott Eastwood also stars in an unspecified role.

Melissa Leo is in negotiations to portray Laura Poitras, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated documentary Citizenfour, who also contributed to the reporting when Edward Snowden leaked NSA documents. Zachary Quinto is in talks to play attorney and journalist Glenn Greenwald, who Edward Snowden entrusted with leaking the documents, "knowing he would handle its publication responsibly." If the deal goes through, Tom Wilkinson will play Ewen MacAskill, an intelligence correspondent for The Guardian who helped break the story of the leaks, which exposed the NSA's mass surveillance tactics.

Oliver Stone is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), with the director also producing alongside Moritz Borman and Eric Kopeloff. Shooting is scheduled to begin in the near future, although no specific production date was given. Zachary Quinto will next be seen in Hitman: Agent 47, and he will also reprise his role as Spock in Star Trek 3. Melissa Leo recently starred in The Equalizer, and she will next be seen in the action sequel London Has Fallen. Tom Wilkinson is coming off his portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson in the Best Picture nominee Selma, and he also stars in the upcoming comedy Unfinished Business.
