According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, starring Jim Carrey, sold more than 600,000 combined DVD and VHS units its first day in release Tuesday, according to industry sources, an impressive showing for a film that took in less than $40 million at the domestic boxoffice.
The video's distributor, Universal Studios Home Video, said "Eternal Sunshine" is on track to sell 1 million combined DVD and VHS units during it first week in release, surpassing all expectations for a title with its boxoffice gross. The sales force was with the George Lucas' Star Wars Trilogy DVD boxed set, making it the No. 1-selling title for the week ending September 26th, according to Nielsen VideoScan.
Officials at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment declined comment on Week 1 sales, but independent industry sources estimate that the boxed set sales topped 3 million units during its first five days on store shelves.
